Welcome back to Bagalia where the food is plentiful, the nightlife’s happening’, and ex-boyfriends come back from the dead! Dennis Hopeless continues Avengers Undercover, picking up from the slower-Deathlocket issue to this all-inclusive, action-packed story about former Runaways member, Nico Minoru. It’s a fun issue with a crazy cliffhanger, and if Nico’s your favorite, this is for you!
If you remember correctly from Avengers Arena, Nico actually dies. She comes back to life even more powerful and more goth than before. Hopeless is so spot on with how her character evolves since she’s one of the most strong-willed members of the group. The most frustrating thing for her is feeling helpless, and after the Chase-Deathlocket encounter last issue, it feels completely justified. Alex Wilder, also former Runaway, is back, helping her train with her new powers. He does this by enraging her, which all feels like a villainous set-up by that sexy Daimon Hellstrom. He wasn’t wearing a shirt! Was he not supposed to be trusted?
What I loved most about Arena that we finally get in this issue is the third party POV. We always get to see the perspectives from our heroes and our villains, but what about those from the outside? Captain America, Maria Hill, and Hank Pym discuss the fates of these teens, and from his involvement earlier on, it’s lovely to see Hank continuing to support the side of the Murder World survivors, empathizing with them. Unfortunately and predictably, Maria Hill could care less.
Kev Walker is back on this issue. We see Deathlocket looking like a teen again, instead of the full scale adult that graced us in the last book thanks to Timothy Green II. Overall, the art team which includes Inker Jason Gorder and Colorist Jean-Francois Beaulieu simply kill it in this issue, illustrating Nico surrounded in a uncontrolled fiery blaze.
Coming from Issue #6 which I was a little disappointed by, this week’s issue was fantastic. I’m not the biggest Nico fan either, but her development as a character is one of the most exciting ones to watch. If you’re also wondering if Hopeless was ever going to touch upon Cammi getting captured by Constrictor…well, you’re in for a treat! This issue is my next favorite after marvelous Issue #4, and is certainly worth the $2.99.
